Executive Director's Message
By Dr. Stacey Meier

Welcome to Arizona’s largest and oldest optometric association, The AZOA has aided our member doctors to become successful eye care providers and has helped the optometric profession to grow and evolve in order to meet the challenges of an always changing health care delivery system.

2014 was the one hundredth year anniversary for the Arizona Optometric Association. A huge milestone and something we should be proud of. The yearlong “Centennial Celebration” began at the spring congress in Tucson with a special exhibit hall historical display, margarita machine and birthday party theme. In Sedona, at our annual fall congress, a record number of attendees enjoyed Friday evening at our “Roaring 20s” casino night, Saturday evening at our industry partners suites, and the annual Dr. Bruce Bridgewater golf outing. Make plans now to attend the 2015 spring congress with special Awards dinner guest, singer, actor, producer, comedian, Mr. Tom Sullivan.

Legislatively, 2014 was also a banner year with the passage of HB 2380, which now allows Arizona licensed Optometrist to prescribe oral steroids, oral anti-glaucoma meds, continue to use analgesic that have been re-classified as Schedule II drugs, and removed much of the mandatory referral language. Dr. Annette Hanian and her Legislative team are very active and always looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help with her efforts. Ask her what you can do to help.

It is never fun asking for PAC contributions, but it’s a necessary part of the political process and your contributions are very much appreciated. There are two optometric PACs for you to contribute to. The Optometric Political Action Committee of Arizona (OPACA) is an AZOA lead fund for instate use, and the AOA – PAC which supports us on the national front.
